Ritual vs. Routine

I s anybody else out there a rusher? I cut corners, speed through tasks and my ego takes a little pride in how quickly I can get a job done.   It turns a chore into a challenge which is fun... until it’s boring and it’s just a chore again. While strumming through the pages of Whole Beauty at the bookstore, a heading about Ritual vs. Routine jumped out at me. I skimmed through the chapter and was inspired to begin turning my often sped through, mundane daily routines into cherished rituals to care for and check in with myself. I practiced the exercise of slowing down and being present while doing daily mundane tasks. It brings the present moment into my day in an easy to accomplish manner. I focus on the water against my skin as I hand wash. I focus on the temperature of the water, its change in consistency once it starts to mix with the soap. The smells, the sounds etc.   Then I pat myself on the back, and I feel a bit more grounded as I carry on with my day. It wa

The Honour and The Privilege

It is my honour and privilege to share an unpublished poem by the incomparable author Chancellor Payne. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. The Honour and The Privilege    I've never climbed the highest mountain, nor swam the deepest sea. I've never explored unchartered wilderness or discovered mystic lands yet to be.                                                    I've never been the wartime hero who rushed into battle with valiant heart. I've never been the martyr for some great cause or a noble saint whose faith would never part. I've never been some great leader who lead a nation to its best. I've never been some grand figure who inspired history's pages and stood out from all the rest. I've never made the winning touchdown or scored the goal to win it all. I've never won the gruelling race or been awarded Olympic medals to fill my wall. I've never slain the fearsome dragon or save

3 no-fail ways to re-enter Alignment when you can’t get back in (+ a bonus last resort!)

The flow you experience when you are in Alignment is addicting. You’re feeling fantastic, everything seems to be going your way, life’s difficulties feel temporary and you’re motivated to fix them without complaint.   But life requires contrast and as a consequence, once you’ve experienced the magic of being in Alignment, it becomes very frustrating when you’re out and can’t seem to get back in. Your usual get happy tricks aren’t working. Netflix is boring, you’re sick of the music on your playlist, it’s too cold to go for a walk and even a piece of your favourite chocolate just ain’t cutting it today. Here are my top three tricks to get you back into Alignment. Accept it (without judgement) This is number one for a reason. It’s one of the most powerful tools you can use when you’re feeling those negative emotions that are keeping you down. It can also be one of the most difficult steps to take. The good news is that once you start practicing acceptance on a r

Surrendering to Acceptance

Why isn’t the universe listening?  I don’t want just a job. I want a calling. I want to feel that the work I do enriches my own life and the lives of others.  My current vocation is teaching at a university. And I really enjoy teaching. That moment when the lightbulb goes on and the student understands a concept they have been struggling with is very rewarding. However, I’m not excited about what I teach. While it feels worthwhile it doesn’t light me up inside.  I’ve been struggling with a career change for a little over a year now. Once I started studying spiritually, meditation, law of attraction and all the other woo-woo new age stuff, a spark lit inside me. I started reading book after book and listening to podcasts and YouTube videos. Life started to make sense and one day while explaining what had changed in me to a friend, we came up with the idea for this blog.  I started sharing what I was studying with you. I loved it. I felt excited to post every week a

My #1 Alignment Trick!

I often get asked what my go to alignment activity is. I hesitate to say for three reasons.  1.What gets me into my highest alignment is not likely to be what gets you into your highest alignment.  2.It’s constantly changing. What gets me into alignment today will not necessarily get me into alignment tomorrow. Last year the spring fair was the most magical day ever! When you go back the next year it’s fun but you end up disappointed that it’s not quite the same. Can you relate? DO NOT CHASE YESTERDAYS ALIGNMENT. Flow into today’s alignment.  3.And the number three reason that I don’t always feel comfortable sharing what is currently getting me most aligned is...that lately...it’s shopping. Shopping can often be seen as a materialistic, ego driven activity. And it can be. When I first started heavily investigating the world of spiritual development one of the first shifts I experienced was I no longer felt any alignment from new things. After reading Eckhart Tolle’ s vi

Selfish or Selfless? What’s your motivation?

L ast night my friend was very upset. One of her staff members had called in sick for the next morning. She herself had a very busy day of meetings and an overwhelming backlog of work to complete. It was close to midnight and she had exhausted all her possible options to fill the shift. She told me she was going to have to go into work for 7am to fill the busy part of the shift herself and her final meeting would be at 6pm. She would have to put in a 12 hour day right after having to work through her weekend due to throwing her staff a holiday party and having to attend a day long training session on her usual days off. She was holding back tears; exhausted. My friend is the hardest working person I know. While I have admired her tenacity at work for years, I have also seen the emotional and physical toll it takes on her.  I began to walk the fine line a best friend in this situation has to walk. Being a sympathetic ear while trying to get her to see the situation fro

Resistance Busting Techniques

Once I imagined it, no other seemed to spark joy in me. A few months ago, inspired by an Instagram picture, I decided I would like to begin collecting a few minimalistic style gold rings. I had a few specifications immediately: they must be high quality, they can’t be too expensive and they must spark joy in me. After purchasing a couple plain gold stacking rings I was ready to invest in a more substantial piece. After searching the internet, markets and a few jewelry stores I began to piece together exactly what this ring should look like through continuously finding what I did not want. I was data collecting but did not yet realize I was also creating resistance. Instead of enjoying the process of figuring out exactly what my new ring will be, I was beginning to grow frustrated. And once I was able to imagine the ring clearly, no other ring seemed to spark any joy in me. My frustration grew. Frustration is at a much lower vibrational level than the joy I expected to feel when

Your Body as Mind or You as Mind?

Where are you putting your energy?  Take two minutes right now.  Close your eyes.  Breathe comfortably.  Don’t try to think or focus on anything.  Where did your mind go?  How long can you manage to not think about what your annoying coworker said to you yesterday? Or the C you got on that paper you thought you aced last week? The type of thoughts your mind was pulling to your attention is an indication of what emotions your body is addicted to. That’s right. Your body can become addicted to emotions. When you have certain thoughts or stressors in your life, chemicals are released into your body. If these thoughts or stressors happen on a consistent basis, your body can become addicted to these chemicals. And like any other kind of addiction, your body starts to crave the feelings and emotions that trigger the chemicals so it can get its fix.  Were your thoughts about anxious situations? Feelings of lack? Anger? Sadness? Whatever the theme was i

The NEW New Years Resolution Part 2

Now, that you have your goals down on paper , we are going to start calling them to us!  Step One : We are going to begin with changing your brain waves to the coherent Alpha or Theta waves. There are different ways to accomplish this. Personally I have found Binaural beats , and breathing exercises very effective. The goal is to enter a relaxed trancelike state. If your the gadget type, you can purchase Muse: The Brain Sensing Headband , which is suppose to monitor your brain waves through a head piece to help keep your meditative state in the optimal range. I haven’t tried it out myself but if enough of you are interested I will give it a test drive! Let me know in the comments if you’ve tried it out yourself or would like to see me review it! Another option is to download Dr. Joe Dispenza’s guided meditation from his website   .This meditation focuses on bringing your attention and awareness to the space around individual parts of your body and then ending with your atten

The NEW New Years resolution!

W ell it’s that time of year again. New year, new you. We sit back and reflect on all the areas of our life we would like to improve. We make a list, we tell ourselves “this is my year!” And by February we have all but forgotten our commitment. This year let’s make our list and actually allow our dreams to come to us. Let’s be supernatural. This year I’m following the steps in Becoming Supernatural: How Common People Are Doing the Uncommon  by Joe Dispenza. And I invite you to try it with me! The new year is only a day away, so let’s get going! You start, unremarkably, by picking a goal. Then you choose a letter to symbolize the goal. In my example (in the photo above) I picked C to symbolize my Career goals for this year. After writing the letter on the center of your page begin writing your intentions. What kind of career do you want? How much money do you want to make? Then finish with writing out the emotions you expect to be feeling once you achieved these intentions. Th

How to get into Alignment

The best advice I’ve ever been given: “Get as happy as you can, as often as you can.” One of biggest roadblocks of my journey came in the form of the elusive alignment requirement.  The word alignment was popping up all over the place.  Let’s start with the basics. What is Alignment? The definition of Alignment can vary from teacher to teacher. Some, as with Eckhart Tolle, see Alignment as being mentally situated in the present moment. Alignment comes when we are not dwelling on the past or anticipating/worrying about the future.  Mindful meditation is a great exercise to train your brain to slow down and focus on the present. A student of mine combats the stress of university by practicing Yoga. She shared with me that the only time she could slow her brain down and relax was during Yoga class. I immediately recognized this as her Alignment practice! Yoga allowed her to be present not focus on the past or future. However, one should not simply restrict thi
